Designing for Smartglasses: An AR Guide for Railway Heritage

Smartglasses are coming from several makers, and the rules for designing them are still being written. At Bahnpark Augsburg, a historic railway roundhouse, I built a hands-free museum guide for Snap Spectacles. Visitors walk up to a locomotive, look at it, and a life-size AI-generated narrator, a locomotive engineer or Empress Sisi, starts telling its story. A trail on the floor leads them to the next stop. Most visitors in the final test had never worn AR glasses before, and they still found it easy to use. The talk is about the design choices behind the guide, how the narrator videos were generated, and what the visitors taught me along the way.
